The bequest of entrepreneur Henry Eastward. Huntington is now one of the nearly exquisite attractions in the Los Angeles region. It's besides non a destination hands explored in full during a single 24-hour interval: between the art, the library holdings and the spreadeagled outdoor spaces, there'south enough to see, and near of it is all-time enjoyed at lingering leisure rather than as part of a mad day-long dash.
Once you've paid your admission, you'll be close to the main library, which holds more six million items—much of it open only to researchers (apply for credentials in advance of your visit). However, some of its well-nigh notable holdings, among them a Gutenberg Bible and the earliest known edition of Chaucer'south The Canterbury Tales, are always on display in the adjoining exhibition hall, alongside regular themed temporary shows.
The art collection is almost every bit notable as the library's drove. Built in 1910, the main business firm is home to a very impressive collection of British fine art, which includes Gainsborough's The Bluish Boy aslope works by Blake, Reynolds and Turner. And over in the newer Scott and Erburu Galleries, y'all'll find a choice of American paintings.
However, despite all these cultural glories, the Huntington'south highlights are outdoors in its vast jigsaw of botanical gardens, arguably the virtually glorious in the unabridged Los Angeles region. The 207 acres of gardens, 120 acres of which are open to the public, are divided into a variety of themes: the Desert Garden, now a century erstwhile, is packed with cacti and other succulents; the Shakespeare Garden evokes a kind of Englishness rarely seen in England these days; the Children's Garden is a delightful mix of educational features and entertaining diversions; and the Japanese garden is quietly, unassumingly magical. Most recent is the Chinese-themed Garden of Flowing Fragrance, a delicate environment built in part by Chinese artisans. Similar much of this fabulous identify, it'south best approached in boring move.

What'south on
A Garden of Words: The Calligraphy of Liu Fang Yuan
Yes, we've been looking forward to this, the beginning edition in an ongoing rotation of works from contemporary Chinese ink artists. Only we're also kind of excited because this exhibition marks the nearly-completion of the Huntington's massively-expanded Chinese Garden. Step inside the snug Studio for Lodging the Heed and you'll notice 20 poetic calligraphic scrolls that inspired inscriptions at named sites across the surrounding Chinese garden. For anyone who can just decipher the Latin alphabet, the wall texts help unpack the art behind the Chinese characters: 1 breaks down the order of strokes with a step-past-step diagram while another unfurls the different components of a scroll mount. Make certain to watch the five-minute process video to scratch some ASMR itches, plus some other that mixes footage of handwriting and interviews from eight of the artists. The delicate works on paper tin but safely stay on brandish for a few months at a time, so the exhibition is split into two rotations: The kickoff is up through mid-December, and then the gallery will go night until the cease of January for the second.
